NAGC Webinar: Using Creative Expression in Grief Groups

Overview

Hosted by the National Association for Grieving Children, this webinar features Art with Heart trainer Annie McCall, MA, LMHC, and former Art with Heart board president, art therapist Helena Hillinga Haas, ATR, LMHC. The webinar will take place on July 26th at 2pm EST, 11AM PST.

Together, they will help participants understand the principles of creative expression and describe how to begin and implement a grief group centered around this practice. Participants will be guided through the initial considerations, setup, curriculum, materials and cleanup, group priming activities, discussion questions, and self-care.

 Objectives

  1. Discuss principles of using creative expression to help grieving youth.
  2. Plan a curriculum that considers target population, therapeutic goals, group size, time, and resources.
  3. Discuss the tactical steps to implementing a creative expression session, including the importance of group guidelines, priming, skill instruction, and discussion.

 About the Presenters

Annie for Art with HeartANNIE McCALL, MA, LMHC, joined Art with Heart as a Trainer in 2005, teaching school counselors how to use Chill & Spill in group settings and as a tool for managing school crisis. She is a contributor to the Leader’s Companion to Chill & Spill. Annie has a private practice providing behavior therapy to adolescents, adults, and families. She specializes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Prolonged Exposure treatment of trauma.  Prior to studying psychology, Annie taught high school English, which forever solidified her love and respect for teenagers.

Helena Hillinga Haas, ATR, LMHC is a licensed mental health counselor and registered art therapist. She Helena Hillinga Haas for Art with Heart graduated from The George Washington University in D.C. with a Master’s degree in art therapy. Currently, Helena works as an art therapist at Seattle Children’s Hospital. There, she works with children aged 3 to 21 who are suffering from chronic and/or life threatening illnesses. Helena has worked with diverse populations throughout her career including older adults with Dementia and stroke recovery patients, inner city youth with multiple psychosocial stressors and challenges and young students suffering from anxiety and newly diagnosed learning disabilities. Helena also has a small private practice. For several years Helena served on the Art with Heart board. In 2013, she volunteered for the organization to conduct grief and loss workshops for students and adults who were impacted by the Sandy Hook shooting. When time allows, Helena enjoys creating art using found objects and mixed media to create little treasures.
