Draw It Out Information

In May 2012, Art with Heart had the honor of helping a classroom work through the grief they felt after fellow classmate, 10-year old Anthony, passed away after a sudden and tragic accident.

We brought in a team of volunteers, along with an Art Therapist who led the children in activities from our “Make Your Mark” workbook – a resource we had created after the Tucson shooting to support the classmates of the 9-year old who was shot and killed. The workbook was a “Frankensteining” of pages from two of our other books that were edited to support the needs of grieving children. After our visits to the classroom, we realized that the need for a resource like this was unfortunately growing, and began our research. This became the beginning of “Draw It Out.

We gathered an Advisory Board of experts (see below) and began the process of evaluating and translating evidence-based practices into therapeutic, interactive activities that can be used in various settings – ranging from grieving camps to hospice settings. We then hand-picked illustrators from around the world whose style matched the vision for each individual page. Curriculum and training are being developed and will be ready by 2014.

Co-authored by Art with Heart’s founder, Steffanie Lorig and Rosalie Frankel, Seattle Children’s Hospital’s Therapeutic Play Coordinator and Art Therapist.

Because of a generous grant from the SAFE CROSSINGS FOUNDATION, we received the funds needed to underwrite the first printing of the book. We received additional funds from our national partners, SAPPI IDEAS THAT MATTER and NEW YORK LIFE FOUNDATION, which allows us to develop curriculum and training, as well as special Draw It Out Kits that will support nonprofits and schools that support children that are experiencing grief.
