JOINING ART WITH HEART’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Art with Heart’s all-volunteer Board of Directors works hard to act in the best interest of the youth we serve and to meet the demands of governing a nonprofit organization.

Would I make a good Board Member?

Being a Board Member doesn’t just mean showing up to meetings once a month. Once the meeting is over, the real work begins. The process of Board Membership starts before you join the board and continues through your tenure and succession.

Before joining the Board, please carefully consider the following:

  • Are you committed and passionate about Art with Heart’s mission?
  • Are you aware that as a Board member, you would be dealing with organizational issues – goals, budgets, planning, etc. – rather than direct service with youth in crisis?
  • Do you have the time that is needed and can commit to all that is needed? The average time required per month is a minimum of 10 hours per month. The position term is 2 years, with opportunity for an extension. The Board meets once a month as a whole and then each member meets with their committees as well in between the meetings. A Board is only as effective as its weakest members and when one member of the board team is not doing his/her job or showing up to meetings, it ultimately has a tremendous impact on the entire organization.
  • Do you have specific skills that can benefit the organization (please contact us to find out what skill set we are currently seeking to add).
  • Have you attended Art with Heart’s special events or trainings?
  • Can you make a significant financial contribution each year to support the organization?

Serving wisely is a fine art and a true privilege. Being a Board member means you hold Art with Heart’s trust and the public’s trust in your hands.

An effective Board Member…

  1. Can describe Art with Heart’s mission to anyone, at anytime, and can share why they are involved with a passion that is visible.
  2. Does what they say they’ll do; they follow through and report their progress on a regular basis.
  3. Asks productive questions at Board meetings so that they fully understand the history and context of an issue enough to exercise good judgment.
  4. Leads or joins a committee to complete needed tasks. Examples of committees include: Finance, Fund Development, Marketing, Programming, Board Development.
  5. Celebrates accomplishments and milestones.
  6. Understands Board expectations:
  • Attend monthly meetings as well as committee meetings
  • Meet with the Executive Director on a regular basis
  • Give and/or raise financial support for the organization
  • Focus your energy on Art with Heart as your charity of choice
  • If this describes YOU, please write to Development@artwithheart.org. Thank you!
