C&S Skill Building Workshop: Your Place

March 28, 2009, 12:33 pm

terry_sketchingIn this Skill-Building Workshop, graphic designer Terry Marks was the lead teaching artist, focusing on the activity, “My Place” from Chill & Spill.

He taught therapists – most of whom had little to no experience making art – how to take the abstract concept of a “safe place” to a finished artistic collage. As they learned how to do it themselves, they were able to see how they could bring the experience back to the kids they served. See more photos in our gallery!

ABOUT CHILL & SPILL SKILL-BUILDING WORKSHOPS:

attendee1Each month, Art with Heart offers these workshops for therapists, social workers, and educators, as well as volunteers in youth-focused organizations and individuals seeking personal enrichment. See the Events download the assassination bureau section of our website for upcoming dates. The projects are planned and art media are selected to suit each unique activity in the Chill & Spill guided journal. We tag-team a licensed mental health therapist with a teaching artist to bring participants a full experience that they can bring back to the youth they work with.

Working together on the Chill & Spill activities, participants and the leaders find that art is not only enjoyable, but also therapeutic. They now have a new skill that directly relates back to their work with youth. Sign up today!

What an incredible night ~ wonderful people, great food, and some fantastic bowling scores. This fundraiser surpassed expectations ~ with over 70 guests, the total donation to Art with Heart was over $8,000, which will go to helping children in crisis through our programs!

Artifex won the trophy this year for Highest Team Average Score and will pass it to next year’s winning team. Jack Foster won a prize for the Highest Individual Average Score and Dawn Austin won a prize for the Lowest Individual Average Score. :-)

Former Board President, Christine Jackson along with LaDauna Wilson put together the event. Thanks to our emcee, Dean Oleson, as well as to others who helped along the way: Rob Pollard, Scott Serna, Sam and Susan Boren, Megan Beck, Cindy Parks, Joel Chrisman, Mike Martin, Sheri Hauser.

Christine stated, “This fundraising event was a wonderful way for the print community to come together in friendly competition and help children who really need our help. I applaud everyone’s enthusiasm and generosity. And, it looks like, due to popular demand, we will be putting together next year’s 2nd Annual Bowling Tournament!”

Thanks to the following teams who participated:

  • Artifex “Ballmovers”
  • Rahzo “The Contenders”
  • Printing Control “Strike Thru’s”
  • ColorGraphics “The Dude Abides”
  • McCallum Print Group “Pin Crushers” and “The King Pins”
  • Janzen & Associates “The Alley Cats”
  • Pollard Group “The Challengers”
  • Dawn & Madzy “The Mixers”

To receive early notice of next year’s event, or to become a sponsor, be sure to send an email to Christine.

Letter from Arizona

March 25, 2009, 11:29 am

Thanks to Judy from Arizona who wrote to Art with Heart today to say…

In your recent newsletter, there is a photo of the young man with his drawing and, for me, it was incredibly inspiring.I’m a believer that each of us has a very unique talent that, once it’s brought to light, can change our life (and the world) immeasurably. In this case, your Art with Heart’s arts-based therapy program provides a special “opener” that uncorks the vessel in these young men and women who might otherwise pass through life without having their artistic expression noticed and/or taken seriously.

The awareness of one’s talents brings self-confidence and hope. What a gift!
